Our assemblies and educational materials are structured to teach students to listen carefully and to be able to understand how music is put together.
Listening carefully is the basis of empathy and listening with the discernment is the basis of critical thinking. Making classical music an integral part of education in this way, benefits the students in all areas of their developmental growth towards productive, meaningful adult members of the community.
Each year, more than 9,000 elementary students in Livermore, Pleasanton, Hayward, Richmond, Pittsburg and Orinda school Districts experience our Discover Music Now educational assemblies.
Our mixed quintet of flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin and cello assemblies teach music is constructed, varied, can evoke feelings and portray characters and tell stories. Each year a different musical fundamental (rhythm, scales, melody, acoustics, form) is presented in depth. The music selected for this assembly program reinforces the message that all musical genres, from classical to pop to jazz to music from movies, dances and marches, utilize the same basic rhythmic principles. PCO also holds clinics for middle and high school music students and a full orchestra school day matinee open to students of all ages.
